The Internship Roadmap

From zero to offer letter — follow this sequence. Don't skip steps.

1

Build Your Foundations (4–6 weeks before applying)

Get these in order before you send a single application. Recruiters verify all of them.

Resume

1-page, ATS-optimized PDF. Use Overleaf (Jake's Template) or our resume service.

LinkedIn Profile

Professional photo, headline with skills, all sections filled, 500+ connections target.

GitHub Portfolio

3–5 pinned projects with READMEs. Green contribution graph matters to tech recruiters.

DSA Practice

Solve 50–100 LeetCode problems (Easy–Medium) before applying to product companies.

2

Research and Shortlist Targets

Don't spray-and-pray. Shortlist 15–20 companies that match your skills, then apply with tailored applications.

  • Research the company's product, tech stack, and recent news
  • Check Glassdoor reviews and interview experiences on GeeksForGeeks
  • Identify hiring managers / HR on LinkedIn in advance
  • Tailor your resume's summary and skills section for each company
3

Apply — Online Portals + Cold Outreach

Use the platforms above. Simultaneously do cold outreach — it dramatically multiplies your chances.

4

Ace the Interview

Most internship interviews have 2–3 rounds: online assessment (OA), technical round, and HR/culture fit.

OA Round

2 DSA problems, 60–90 min. Practice on LeetCode, HackerRank. Speed matters.

🛠

Technical Round

Explain your projects deeply. STAR method. Know your resume cold.

🤝

HR Round

Why this company? Where do you see yourself? Prepare 5 stories from your experience.

5

Convert & Maximize the Internship

Getting the internship is step one. Converting it into a PPO (Pre-Placement Offer) is the real goal.

  • Set clear goals with your manager in week 1
  • Over-communicate progress — send weekly updates even if not asked
  • Volunteer for extra tasks; solve problems beyond your scope
  • Ask for a LinkedIn recommendation before you leave

Tips Most Students Don't Know

These aren't on Google. They come from seniors who've been through it.

Apply in the First 24 Hours

LinkedIn data shows that applications in the first 24 hours of a job posting get 4× more views. Set job alerts and apply the moment listings go live.

The LinkedIn "Open to Work" Hack

Set "Open to Work" visible only to recruiters (not your entire network). Add "seeking internship" in your headline. Recruiters search by headline keywords.

Referrals Beat Cold Applications

A referral from an employee multiplies your interview chances by 5–10×. Message alumni from your college currently working at your target company on LinkedIn.

Use ChatGPT to Tailor Your Resume

Paste the job description and your resume into ChatGPT. Ask it to identify keyword gaps and rewrite your bullet points with exact JD language to pass ATS filters.

Hackathons = Backdoor Interviews

Companies like Flipkart, Razorpay, and Atlassian directly recruit internship candidates from hackathons. DevFolio and HackerEarth list all major Indian hackathons.

Follow Up After 7 Days

If you've applied and heard nothing, send a brief, polite follow-up email exactly 7 days later. Most students don't do this — it gets you to the top of the pile.

Common Questions

When should I start applying for internships?
Start 3–4 months before you want the internship to begin. For summer internships (May–July), begin applying in January–February. For large companies like Google, Microsoft, and Goldman Sachs, applications open as early as August–September. The earlier you apply, the better your chances since headcount fills up fast.
Can I get a good internship with a low CGPA?
Yes — through projects, skills, and referrals. Many startups and product companies care far more about your GitHub and portfolio than CGPA. Service companies (TCS, Infosys, Wipro) have hard cutoffs, usually 6.5–7.0. The strategy with low CGPA: build 3–4 excellent projects, contribute to open source, and target companies via cold outreach and referrals rather than mass portals that auto-filter by CGPA.
Should I do a paid or unpaid internship?
Prefer paid internships — they signal the company values your work and will likely give you real responsibility. However, early in college (1st–2nd year), a strong unpaid internship at a well-known company can massively improve your resume for later opportunities. Never do more than one unpaid internship in your career; after that, your time has market value.
How do I get an internship at a top tech company (FAANG/MAANG)?
The formula is consistent: strong DSA fundamentals (150+ LeetCode problems, mostly medium), a clean resume with 2–3 solid projects, and referrals from alumni already working there. Apply through official career portals and simultaneously reach out to a recruiter on LinkedIn. Google, Microsoft, and Amazon all have dedicated programs for early-career students (Google STEP, Microsoft Explore).
What is a PPO and how do I convert an internship into one?
A Pre-Placement Offer (PPO) is a full-time job offer extended to an intern before their graduation, based on internship performance. To convert: exceed expectations on every assigned task, communicate proactively, build relationships with your team and manager, volunteer for high-visibility work, and — most importantly — ask directly in the final week whether a PPO is possible. Companies budget for conversions and many will offer if you ask confidently.
Is Internshala legitimate? Are the internships real?
Yes — Internshala is India's most legitimate internship platform and has placed hundreds of thousands of students. However, quality varies. Check that the company has a verified logo, a real website, and positive reviews. Never pay to apply. Avoid listings that ask for your Aadhaar, bank details, or any upfront fee — those are scams.
